               </h1>
               God looked down and said<br />
               Kill me a son<br />
               But when one son was dead<br />
               The killing wasn't done<br /><br />
               The killing went on<br />
               And more sons came<br />
               Some said it was wrong<br />
               But more were still slain<br /><br />
               Why did we make war?<br />
               To that place in the East<br />
               WMDs for sure<br />

   Captain Gregory Robert Samuels is a&amp;nbsp;retired Army Officer and the former Company
   Commander of the 143rd Military Police Company out of 
   &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:city w:st="on"&gt;West Hartford&lt;/st1:city&gt;
      , 
      &lt;st1:state w:st="on"&gt;Connecticut&lt;/st1:state&gt;
   &lt;/st1:place&gt;
   .&amp;nbsp; The 143rd Military Police Company was deployed to 
   &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:city w:st="on"&gt;Baghdad&lt;/st1:city&gt;
      , 
      &lt;st1:country-region w:st="on"&gt;Iraq&lt;/st1:country-region&gt;
   &lt;/st1:place&gt;
   from April 2003 until April 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF1).&amp;nbsp;
   Captain Samuels was wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) on 09 September
   2003.&amp;nbsp; He was medically evacuated to 
   &lt;st1:country-region w:st="on"&gt;Germany&lt;/st1:country-region&gt;
   then back to the 
   &lt;st1:country-region w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;United States&lt;/st1:place&gt;
   &lt;/st1:country-region&gt;
   due to a serious shrapnel injury to his right arm and subsequent nerve damage.&amp;nbsp;
   He returned to 
   &lt;st1:country-region w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;Iraq&lt;/st1:place&gt;
   &lt;/st1:country-region&gt;
   at the beginning of December 2003.&amp;nbsp; The whole unit returned to the 
   &lt;st1:country-region w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;United States&lt;/st1:place&gt;
   &lt;/st1:country-region&gt;
   in April 2004.&amp;nbsp; Eleven soldiers, including Captain Samuels, were awarded the
   Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.&amp;nbsp; Not one soldier from the 143rd Military
   Police Company was killed while serving in 
   &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:city w:st="on"&gt;Baghdad&lt;/st1:city&gt;
      , 
      &lt;st1:country-region w:st="on"&gt;Iraq&lt;/st1:country-region&gt;
   &lt;/st1:place&gt;
   .&amp;nbsp; The 143rd Military Police Company recently was awarded the Valorous Unit Award
   for "extraordinary heroism in military operations against an armed enemy."&amp;nbsp; Captain
   Samuels was also awarded the Bronze Star while serving in 
   &lt;st1:country-region w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;Iraq&lt;/st1:place&gt;
   &lt;/st1:country-region&gt;
   .&amp;nbsp; He currently lives in 
   &lt;st1:city w:st="on"&gt;Mansfield&lt;/st1:city&gt;
   , 
   &lt;st1:state w:st="on"&gt;Connecticut&lt;/st1:state&gt;
   , with his wife and two dogs and is a graduate of the 
   &lt;st1:place w:st="on"&gt;
      &lt;st1:placetype w:st="on"&gt;University&lt;/st1:placetype&gt;
      of 
      &lt;st1:placename w:st="on"&gt;Connecticut&lt;/st1:placename&gt;
   &lt;/st1:place&gt;
   class of 1992, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.&amp;nbsp;
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class=MsoNormal&gt;
&lt;/p&gt;
